This is a tonal drawing for sculpture class. We are to integrate an animal with a sculpture portrait of ourselves in clay. Kind of spiritual I suppose.
SYMBOLISM OF THE LION: -Letting go of stress -Strong family ties -Courage -Energy -Ferocity -Royatly -Dominion -Justice -Wisdom -Assertion of the Feminine -Power of the Female Sun
I think it suits me!
This was good practice . I rarely do anything in graphite so I had fun and it was different. Id like to do more.
Very, very beautiful. LOVE the soft texture. And the eyes are just marvelous.
I want to ask one little question.....I have a sketch of a lion ready, BUT I do not know how to begin with the short fur.... Just how did you do it in this piece? It looks really really realistic, and I want to aim at realism
Sure! I used graphite here. What I do first is apply a base of graphite. I don`t work directly on the white of the paper, in otherwords. I take a tissue and smudge my pigment everywhere. Using hard pencils first isnt the best of ideas, because it dents the paper. You can use that later to fill in holes. I smudged with an F pencil. I didnt press too hard neither with the pencil, nor the tissue when smudging because again, we dont want to damage the paper. Then I used a first layer of fur strokes with the F pencil, and then went with softer leads. Sometimes its a good idea toput down your darks, (pupils, etc) to get a nice contrast. Pay close attention to which direction the fur is growing in.
Ok, so as I understood, if I were to use your technique (or something close to it) I should just lay down a tone layer, then lay down the base fur hairs, and then fill in the missing ones with softer pencils, am I right? And yes, will start with the darks first I will try working on the eyes first, and then with the inside of the mouth (am using an image of a roaring lion). Oh and I actually never work with hard pencils, they just make things matters worse.
This darwing is really nice. Good job!!! love how you did the eye. But i think the drawing would be even better if the contrat, between the head and the background was stronger. What do you think?

Unfurl: The empty nighttime city with the snowy sky. Desolate and lonely, yet slightly sleepy.
